Preparing your baby for their Cake Smash in Barnsley
Is your little one’s first birthday approaching? If so, you’re probably considering how to mark the most special birthday and you’ve also probably considered a cake-smash portrait session to celebrate!
It’s one of my most popular portrait session types and for good reason. For starters you actually get three sessions in one – but also they’re so much fun – and messy!!
But how do you prepare your baby—and yourself—for this messy, adorable, and oh-so-memorable event? Let’s dive into some tips to make your baby’s cake smash a smashing success!
CHOOSE THE RIGHT CAKE
First and foremost, the cake!
With our Cake Smash packages, then you either bring your own cake, or opt to have one of our beautifully made Cake Smash Cakes by The Crumb Kitchen.
If you are bringing your own cake, then you need to opt for a cake that’s not just visually appealing but also baby-friendly. Soft, moist sponge cakes are easier for little hands to smash. Avoid hard icing or decorations that could be a choking hazard.
If you choose one of our professionally made cakes, then we will talk about what colours you would like to incorporate within your session so that we can make sure your cake is prepared perfectly for you.
TOP TIP: Avoid chocolate cake and instead opt for vanilla sponge as chocolate cake has a habit of looking like something less pleasant in your images!
PICK THE PERFECT OUTFIT
This is a portrait session that you’ll cherish forever, so make sure your baby looks the part. Many parents opt for a cute but simple outfit like a onesie or a tutu for the cake smash part but please remember, it’s going to get messy!
Choose something that you don’t mind getting covered in cake, but is equally comfortable for your baby to move around in.
As the Cake Smash Session is split into 3, also remember an outfit for the classic portraits before we can change little one into the chosen Cake Smash outfit.
SET THE STAGE
At Blue Lights Photography we opt for a simple, elegant set-up for your Cake Smash photoshoot to focus on your little one with their reaction and fun.
DO A TEST RUN
If your baby has never tasted cake before, it might be a good idea to do a little test run before the event. Let them try a small piece of cake or even just the frosting. This will help you gauge their reaction and make any necessary adjustments that we may need to consider.
I’ve had babies in before for their photoshoot and they’ve never tasted cake before and they’ve hated the taste, or texture, of the frosting so let them have a play with it themselves.
KEEP ESSENTIALS HANDY
Whilst we do a cleanup Splash Time portrait part of the session, also be prepared for a quick cleanup too. Sometimes little ones can get a bit overwhelmed and want a cuddle with you, so wet wipes, a drink and a towel are good nearby items to have.
BE PATIENT AND GO WITH THE FLOW
Every baby reacts differently to a cake smash. Some dive right in, while others might be a bit hesitant. That’s perfectly okay! The most important thing is to let your baby explore and have fun at their own pace. Don’t rush or force it; the best photos often come from genuine moments.
WRAP-UP
There you have it—your guide to preparing your baby for their first cake smash. With a bit of planning you’re all set to make this first birthday celebration a memorable one. So, let them eat cake and let the memories roll!
